Construction of the centrepiece building for the $411 million St George Hospital Redevelopment has been completed, marking a major milestone in the delivery of modern health infrastructure for southern Sydney.
The nine-storey Kensington Street Building will house community and outpatient services, bringing care together under one roof and improving access, coordination and efficiency across the hospital campus.
The facility is expected to open in the coming months, with final preparations underway to ensure staff and systems are ready to receive patients.
Stage three of the redevelopment includes outpatient, ambulatory and integrated care services, pathology collection, a new day rehabilitation unit, expanded sub-acute and rehabilitation inpatient beds, a sub-acute aged care unit, behavioural support unit, rehabilitation cognitive transition unit, palliative care facilities, refurbished operating theatres and procedure rooms, enhanced imaging services including MRI and nuclear medicine, a new clinical skills centre and co-located basement parking.
For the first time at St George Hospital, patients recovering from brain injuries will be able to access structured rehabilitation programs focused on helping them regain skills and return home safely.
The new building will also include a dedicated behavioural support unit to treat and manage older patients with cognitive conditions, including dementia and delirium.
The Stage three works complement earlier upgrades, including the Emergency Department, nine-level acute services building and refurbished birthing suite and operating theatres.
It is estimated the redevelopment has supported around 750 direct jobs, as well as thousands of indirect roles over the life of the project.
The project forms part of the New South Wales Government’s broader hospital redevelopment program, delivering new and upgraded health facilities and additional beds across the state.
Premier of New South Wales Chris Minns said the redevelopment would support the growing local community.
“As the local MP, I am really proud St George Hospital’s redevelopment is almost job done,” Mr Minns said.
“This redevelopment is about making sure our local hospital can keep up with a growing community with better facilities for patients and a better workplace for staff.”
Minister for Health Ryan Park said the new building would improve service integration and accessibility.
“I look forward to seeing the doors open to patients at the new Kensington Street Building, which will bring together a range of ambulatory, outpatient and community services to provide better health outcomes,” Mr Park said.
“It is so important to provide our dedicated health staff with a modern, purpose-built health facility which caters to the needs of patients, families and clinicians.”
