The Parramatta Light Rail has celebrated its first anniversary, marking 12 months of modern, turn-up-and-go services connecting the communities of Westmead, Parramatta, Camellia and Carlingford.
Since opening, the network has quickly become one of Western Sydney’s most popular public transport links, delivering about 3.2 million passenger trips and becoming a vital part of everyday travel for commuters, students, visitors and families.
In its first year, the light rail recorded:
- Busiest day so far: (28th August 2025), with about 13,000 passenger trips as crowds travelled on the Parramatta Light Rail
- Busiest hour on average: 8am-9am, when the network saw around 1,100 passengers during the peak commute
The Parramatta Light Rail has delivered frequent and accessible services every seven minutes in peak periods.
Its introduction has also supported local jobs and economic activity across Western Sydney, with new businesses, precinct activations and increased foot traffic along the route.
Safety remains a strong focus for the Transport for NSW light rail operations team.
Over the past year, several collisions with motor vehicles have occurred with the Parramatta Light Rail highlighting the need for increased awareness around the tracks.
Transport for NSW Coordinator General, Howard Collins, said, “Reaching the first anniversary of the Parramatta Light Rail is a testament to the hard work of everyone who brought this project to life and keeps it running day after day.
“But with success comes responsibility. We have seen a number of collisions with road vehicles at different areas of the Parramatta Light Rail, and we are putting a safety lens over everything we do,” Collins said.
“That means educating the community, enhancing visibility and reminding pedestrians, drivers and cyclists to stay alert around the tracks.
“Our focus for year two is not only to keep the network reliable and well-used, but to ensure every journey is as safe as possible for customers, staff and the broader community.”
