Inland Rail has installed a new bridge at Wandong, creating safer crossings and stronger connections as part of the Beveridge to Albury project.
The higher bridge provides the clearance needed for double-stacked freight trains, while wider lanes, an upgraded Rail Street roundabout and a new shared user path will improve safety and access for both vehicles and pedestrians. The bridge also connects to extended community spaces and gardens, offering safer pedestrian routes separated from traffic.
Prefabricated in Adelaide and assembled onsite, the 35-metre-long, 14.5-metre-wide bridge is made up of 41 main and cross girders and weighs approximately 246 tonnes. It was lifted into place by a 600-tonne mobile crawler crane. Once the new bridge opens later this year, the existing Broadford-Wandong Road bridge will be demolished.
Russell Hamilton, Inland Rail Beveridge to Albury Project Director, said the bridge marked an important milestone.
“The installation of the bridge is an exciting milestone for the project,” Hamilton said.
“Once complete, it will provide a much safer crossing for pedestrians, with the shared user path separated from traffic. New connecting pathways will make it easier to access the extended community spaces and gardens. Road users will benefit from wider lanes and an improved Rail Street intersection with the addition of a new roundabout. We would like to thank the Wandong community for their ongoing patience and support while these important works are carried out.”
The bridge installation is a key step toward completing the Beveridge to Parkes sections of Inland Rail by 2027.
