Construction works at Mordialloc are using new technology to improve sustainability outcomes during the removal of level crossings at McDonald Street and Station Street.
As works continue on the two sites, the project team has introduced a hybrid generator system to reduce energy use, noise and emissions during construction.
The team partnered with Indigenous-owned and female-led renewable energy business Djookian, founded by former AFLW players Kirby Bentley and Leah Kaslar, to identify more environmentally sustainable power solutions.
Djookian recommended the Purple CUBE hybrid generator, which is quieter than traditional diesel units, solar capable and equipped with 800 kilowatt hours of energy storage, reducing carbon emissions by up to 70 per cent.
The Purple CUBE has been operating on site since November and has delivered measurable benefits, including an 83 per cent reduction in diesel consumption and emissions, reduced engine hours and lower operating costs.
The generator will continue to supply power as construction progresses on the new Mordialloc rail bridge and elevated Mordialloc Station.
The level crossing removals at McDonald Street and Station Street form part of the broader Frankston Line upgrade program.
Once complete, both crossings will be permanently removed and the new Mordialloc Station is scheduled to open in 2026, supporting improved safety, reduced congestion and progress towards a level crossing-free corridor by 2029.
