Piling works have been completed for the new road bridge in Altona, marking a key milestone in the removal of the Maidstone Street level crossing.
A 140-tonne piling rig drilled 23 holes, each up to nine metres deep and 1.5 metres wide, to form the foundations for the new bridge.
Each pile has been fitted with reinforced steel cages and filled with concrete, providing structural support for the bridge superstructure.
Over the coming months, construction crews will continue relocating underground services and building the remaining foundations in preparation for bridge beams to be installed in mid-2026.
The removal of the Maidstone Street level crossing is expected to improve connectivity for the surrounding industrial precinct and enhance safety for more than 14,400 vehicles that use the crossing each day, as well as pedestrians and cyclists.
Once complete, the project will permanently separate road and rail traffic, reducing congestion and improving reliability across the corridor.
The new bridge is scheduled to open to traffic in 2027, when the level crossing will be removed.
Works are also progressing on the nearby Maddox Road and Champion Road level crossings in Newport, as part of wider efforts to improve safety and network efficiency along the corridor.
