Austroads has released nine new technical specifications to guide best practice in the construction and maintenance of road and transport infrastructure, covering earthworks, stormwater, traffic facilities, and safety barriers.

The specifications aim to help practitioners deliver safer, more durable, and efficient projects.

Austroads Transport Infrastructure Program Manager, Ross Guppy, said that these specifications provide consistent guidance across critical areas of design and construction, helping industry standardise approaches, reduce risk, and improve the quality and longevity of infrastructure projects.

“They represent an important step towards harmonising practices across jurisdictions and ensuring sustainable construction methods,” Guppy said.

The new specifications include:

Earthworks and Stormwater:

  • ATS-2135-25 Management of Acid Sulfate Soils – Requirements for identifying, testing, and treating acid sulfate soils during construction to prevent environmental degradation.

  • ATS-2170-25 Geosynthetic Reinforcement – Guidance on supplying and installing high-strength geosynthetic products for embankment reinforcement and stability.

  • ATS-2180-25 Dry Deep Soil Mixing – Specifications for ground improvement using dry deep soil mixing techniques to enhance soil strength and stability.

  • ATS-2185-25 Concrete Injected Columns – Requirements for constructing concrete injected columns to strengthen soft soils.

  • ATS-2240-25 Construction of Stormwater Infrastructure – Standards for building reinforced concrete pipes, culverts, and associated drainage structures.

Traffic Facilities and Incidental Construction:

  • ATS-4550-25 Supply of Pits and Covers for Cabling – Requirements for pits and covers used for telecommunications and electrical cabling.

  • ATS-4560-25 Installation of Conduits and Pits – Standards for installing conduits and pits to protect electrical and communications cables.

Safety Barriers:

  • ATS-4210-26 Steel Beam Safety Barrier – Requirements for the supply and installation of steel beam safety barrier systems, including end terminals, for new installations and repairs.

  • ATS-4220-26 Wire Rope Safety Barrier – Specifications for the supply and installation of wire rope safety barrier systems for new installations and repairs.

The specifications are available for download via the Austroads website and provide a single reference for practitioners, helping ensure consistent, high-quality delivery across Australia’s transport networks.
